General Presentation
Between the gentle rocking of the surf and the plaintive whistling of the swell, "Flo and the Murmurs" transposes the great expanses of the ocean into an intimate, skin-deep universe. Carried by the soft and clear tone of the singer Marie-Flo Burki and the sensorial fabric of a string quartet, the music sails between experimental folk and contemporary jazz in a neo-classical atmosphere. This ensemble’s first project, "The Waves", borrows its words from Virginia Woolf to tell sensual stories filled with images of the natural world. Double bass, cello, viola, violin and voice enter in dialogue to paint a poetic fresco that is at once fragile, melancholic, poignant, and luminous.

Flo and the Murmurs
Flo and the Murmurs are a voice and four strings navigating on the border between jazz and folk in a chamber music aesthetic. The ensemble was formed in 2020 under the impulse of the singer and composer Marie-Flo Burki who sought to explore the range of colors offered by a string quartet. In the absence of a rhythm section the groove is created entirely by the textures of the strings. The versatility of the voice and instruments allows the musicians to evolve in a constant flow. Soft and gentle or fiery and percussive, the quartet breathes life into the singer's melodic meanderings.

The Waves
The perpetual motion of the waves mirrors the incessant race of time, which moves forth in a continuous motion. Virginia Woolf's most experimental work is set to the music of the ocean. Published in 1931, "The Waves" is a polyphonic piece tracing the lives of six friends through their inner monologues. This introspective text not only recounts events and opinions from the standpoint of the narrators, but also reflects the chaotic development of their thoughts and perceptions. Moments of life are sublimated. Sensations become sensual. Streams of thought are imbued with such dazzling beauty that they transcend the banality of existence. This poetry-laden prose calls for a musical interpretation. Intricately woven with the words, the strings sometimes appear as a narrative voice of their own. The resulting songs feature meandering melodies set against textures that recall the rhythm of the waves.
